The past year at Spazju Kreattiv Cinema has been an exciting journey through the realms of cinematic artistry, cultural exploration, and thought-provoking storytelling. Our diverse programme has offered something for every cinephile, from timeless classics and international retrospectives to contemporary documentaries and live performances. Here’s a look back at the highlights of our 2023-2024 Arthouse Cinema Programme.
Some of the most popular entries included R.M.N. by acclaimed auteur Cristian Mungiu, the Oscar-winning feature Poor Things by filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos, Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers, and Matteo Garrone’s story of survival, Io Capitano.
In February, we set the tone for a romantic evening with a special Valentine’s Day screening of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Attendees enjoyed chocolates and prosecco, adding a touch of elegance to this poignant exploration of love and memory. We also celebrated the 25th anniversary of The Matrix with a one-night-only screening of the digitally remastered 4K version. Fans and new viewers alike relished the opportunity to experience this groundbreaking sci-fi classic on the big screen once again.
In collaboration with the Ukrainian Foundation, we presented Mstyslav Chernov’s harrowing documentary, 20 Days in Mariupol. The screening was followed by a Q&A session, offering a platform for in-depth discussions on the realities of conflict zone reporting and the importance of truthful journalism.
We were thrilled to host a comprehensive retrospective of Ingmar Bergman’s work in collaboration with Arts Council Malta. Audiences were captivated by the profound exploration of human existence and innovative visual storytelling that characterises Bergman’s films. This series was a significant highlight, attracting both longtime fans and new viewers to the world of this cinematic genius. Additionally, our collaboration with EUNIC Malta brought an array of international films to our screens, celebrating cultural diversity and artistic expression from across Europe and beyond.
Our Exhibition on Screen series continued to bridge the gap between visual arts and cinema, featuring Painting the Modern Garden: Manet to Matisse, Klimt and the Kiss, Tokyo Series, and Vermeer: The Greatest Exhibition. Our live screenings from the National Theatre and MET Opera brought the magic of world-class theatre and opera to local audiences. Highlights included National Theatre Live productions such as Vanya, Dear England, The Motive and the Cue, and NYE, as well as MET Opera performances of Dead Man Walking, The Life and Times of Malcolm X, Florencia en el Amazonas, Nabucco, Carmen, La Forza del Destino, Roméo et Juliette, La Rondine, and Madama Butterfly.
In November, we engaged youth in a European-wide event, screening films and hosting Q&A sessions during the European Film Academy – Young Audience Film Weekend. Participants also had the opportunity to apply as jury members for the European Film Academy Young Audience Awards, fostering a deeper connection with European cinema. For the 8th European Arthouse Cinema Day, we screened Der traumhafte Weg (The Dreamed Path), Hiroshima, mon amour, and Belfast, celebrating the richness of European film culture.
As part of the Creative Europe MEDIA programme, we screened On the Adamant, a poignant documentary by Nicolas Philibert, during European Cinema Night, engaging our audience with stories of resilience and care. We proudly showcased the five finalist films of the LUX Audience Award, including The Teachers’ Lounge, 20,000 Species of Bees, On the Adamant, Smoke Sauna Sisterhood, and Fallen Leaves. This initiative highlighted the European Parliament’s commitment to cultural diversity and cinema.
Our themed film days brought the best of arthouse cinema to our audiences. French Film Days featured Petite Nature, Médecin de Nuit, Adolescentes, and Les Chatouilles. Italian Film Days included Il sol dell’avvenire, L’Ordine del Tempo, Il più bel secolo della mia vita, and Gloria!. We also hosted Estonian Film Days, Romanian Film Days, and Lithuanian Film Days. Spanish Film Days showcased Nacidas Para Sufrir, Siete Vírgenes, Mi Gran Noche, and 15 años y un día. Irish Film Days presented Barber and Young Plato. Lastly, the Palestinian Film Days, the latest addition to this strand, featured The Crossing, The Present, Salt of This Sea, and The Guardian of Memory.
2023-2024 has been a remarkable year for Spazju Kreattiv Cinema, filled with memorable screenings and enriching cultural experiences. We thank our audience for their continued support and look forward to another year of cinematic excellence.
