Introduction

The unveiling of the Spazju Kreattiv, Malta’s National Centre for Creativity, 2023-2024 programme last September marks a pivotal moment in Fondazzjoni Kreattività’s mission. Rooted in the principle of ‘Il-Qalba tal-Kreattività’ (The Heart of Creativity), Spazju Kreattiv aspires to elevate artistic standards, foster international partnerships, and strengthen connections within and beyond the local community.

To achieve these ambitious objectives, the programme features a vibrant array of events and activities, showcasing both Maltese and international talent. From theatre performances and exhibitions to films and educational initiatives, each offering is designed to engage audiences of all ages and interests. Recognising the crucial role of collaboration, Fondazzjoni Kreattività has forged meaningful relationships with key stakeholders in Malta and abroad, working together to develop impactful projects and initiatives.

The Foundation is steadfast in its commitment to the high standards expected of Malta’s National Centre for Creativity, emphasising creative quality, community outreach, and international development. This programme reflects the Foundation’s dedication to its mandate and its vital contribution to Malta’s arts and cultural sector.

A key objective is to enhance the physical experience for attendees at its venues. The current programme continues to employ innovative communication strategies to extend its reach, strengthen its brand and engage a broader audience.

The dedication and hard work of the Foundation and its staff have been instrumental in realising the Foundation’s long-standing vision of acting as a catalyst for creative expression. The establishment of Spazju Kreattiv back in 2000 has made arts, creativity, and innovation significantly more accessible and relevant to audiences, including those in the creative sector and the general public, both locally and internationally. The Foundation’s efforts have woven arts and creativity into the framework of daily life, playing a vital role in shaping Malta’s cultural identity and contributing to the social well-being of its population.

In addition to the comprehensive Spazju Kreattiv programme, Fondazzjoni Kreattività has been hosting the ŻiguŻajg Festival for the past 13 years. The 2023 Festival featured an impressive lineup of 16 projects spanning various genres, including musicals, art exhibitions, dance, theatre, film, and more, offering something for everyone. Moreover, the ŻiguŻajg Season, part of the Spazju Kreattiv programme, has seen increased participation in events and performances curated specifically for children and their families. Running from December 2023 to July 2024, this season offered a diverse array of experiences designed to excite and engage young audiences. The ŻiguŻajg Festival and ŻiguŻajg Season mark significant milestones in the Foundation’s commitment to promoting the importance of arts and creativity for children and young people.

Furthermore, in 2024, Fondazzjoni Kreattività launched a corporate branch under the title of the historic premises Saint James Cavalier. This branch hosts corporate conferences and events, both local and international. All funds generated from these events are reinvested into the Foundation’s art and creative programmes.

In conclusion, the Fondazzjoni Kreattività team, united by determination and motivation, has successfully moved forward with a positive mindset. We take pride in the achievements of the past year. The 2023-2024 Annual Review not only reflects these accomplishments but also serves as another stepping stone toward our future goals. It marks another milestone in our journey, testifying to our collective hard work and dedication. This review inspires us, reminding us of our progress and encouraging us to pursue our vision with renewed vigour and determination.

Together, we continue to transform Malta’s cultural landscape, making creativity and the arts an integral part of our community’s identity and future.

Communication: The Key to Success

The Marketing & Communications team developed a strategic approach to tailor their channels, ensuring the organisation’s message reached its target audiences effectively. By leveraging data-driven insights and innovative techniques, this approach has had a significant and positive impact on the Fondazzjoni as a whole.

The holistic communications strategy aims to seamlessly weave the organisation’s narrative and story into the Fondazzjoni’s brand, presenting these elements consistently across all platforms. This includes creating engaging social media content, ensuring website cohesion, and implementing a variety of public relations efforts.

Additionally, the team focused on maintaining a coherent and unified brand voice, which has strengthened the overall public perception and engagement. By integrating these diverse communication methods, the Fondazzjoni has successfully enhanced its visibility and reinforced its core values and mission to its stakeholders.

Frédéric Jousset

President of the Art Explora Foundation

“The Maltese stopover of the Art Explora Festival, co-created by the Art Explora Foundation and Spazju Kreattiv, was a major moment in the Art Explora Festival’s history. The success it met sets the tone for the rest of the festival’s itinerancy. It represents the beginning of a 3-year promising journey that will enable the Art Explora Foundation to continue its mission: sharing the arts with as many people as possible. It is also the perfect example of how a close and fruitful collaboration between two international cultural organisations can lead to a rich, popular, and free cultural event that brings audiences together.”

Spazju Kreattiv serves as the natural home for artists, where ideas are shared, nurtured, and brought to fruition within an environment that fosters respect and support in the best possible manner. From the inception of a concept to the completion of a project, creative practitioners find themselves surrounded by a team of experts in their respective fields, all unified by their own artistic talents and passion for the arts. This collective commitment to sharing a common objective ensures that artistic endeavours reach a high standard, ultimately translating into satisfaction for both the audience and the creators themselves.

Patricia Abela

Artist in Residence

Connecting with the Maltese community as an Australian artist, I directed, designed, and facilitated specialised sculptural workshops with the Society of the Blind in Malta during my artist residency with Spazju Kreattiv. I was able to engage with the community through my Maltese heritage, teaching experience, and environmental background, resulting in a unique, memorable, and uplifting experience for all involved. The installation was proudly exhibited at the Valletta Design Cluster.

Brandon Terribile

Director: Snowglobe – ŻiguŻajg Season 2023/2024

Working with Spazju Kreattiv on the groundbreaking Snowglobe project was a transformative experience in an inclusive theatre. Together, we crafted a multi-sensory production that prioritised accessibility for neurodivergent and autistic audiences in Malta. The support and dedication of Spazju Kreattiv were instrumental in making this innovative vision a reality.

Collaborations are essential in fostering innovative creative endeavours, making them particularly important for the Spazju Kreattiv season. The programme is crafted through partnerships with artists, organisations, private entities, colleagues, and other supporters. Spazju Kreattiv has formalised its partnerships by establishing memoranda of understanding with public entities and agreements with non-governmental organisations. By building on positive relationships, many of which have developed informally over the years, Spazju Kreattiv continues to strengthen and maintain these connections to coordinate various projects with different stakeholders as part of its creative endeavours.

Memoranda of Understanding facilitate collaboration between Spazju Kreattiv and other entities, allowing them to work together within a long-term framework towards a shared objective.

Aġenzija Żgħażagħ and Spazju Kreattiv have extended their collaboration to further their mission of creating and fostering a creative environment for emerging artists through the project of Shifting Context III. In 2023-2024, both organisations built on the success of the previous two editions by producing the third exhibition curated by Trevor Borg.

For another year, Spazju Kreattiv and MCAST continued their collaboration with the 8th edition of the MCAST ICA Festival, marking the 5th edition hosted at Spazju Kreattiv. The Festival, which took place between July and September, provided a platform for graduating students from the Institute of Creative Arts to showcase their creative work.

Furthermore, Spazju Kreattiv extended partnerships with other entities specialising in different areas of expertise. This included collaborating with The Malta Chamber of Scientists to host popular events to bridge sciences and the arts, such as Kids Dig Science, Malta Café Scientifique, and ĊineXjenza. Along the same lines, Spazju Kreattiv worked with SACES, the Society for Architecture & Civil Engineering students at the University of Malta, for their collective exhibition Architecture Student EXPO 2023 held throughout the months of September and October 2023. The programme was also host to an exhibition with the finalists of the Premju għall-Artiġjanat Malti in collaboration with the Malta Crafts Foundation

The collaborative exhibition ‘the wind blows… …waves in all directions’, curated by Bobb Attard & Mohamed Ali Agrebi with Malta LGBTIQ Rights Movement forming part of the EuroPride 2023 programme aimed to raise awareness about LGBTIQ+ issues. Using Maltese and Tunisian contexts as parallel bases for this exhibition, artists and activists from 11 Mediterranean countries reflect on the past, present and future, as well as their community and their own identities with running themes of resistance through activism, gender expression, sexual liberation and self-exploration throughout the exhibition. The celebratory event also featured performative events in our theatre and studio spaces throughout September, positioning Spazju Kreattiv as the main hub for the organised artistic programme.

The season included cooperation on the 1st edition of the Malta Biennale organised by Heritage Malta which resulted in partnerships on selected visual arts events, the film programme and the Art Explora Festival.

This year’s programme featured collaborative initiatives with various other Public Cultural Organisations.

ŻfinMalta was among the collaborators this year, presenting the project Aerial by Paolo Mangiola and  ‘Cantata’ by Mauro Bigonzetti as part of the Art Explora Festival. Aerial by Paolo Mangiola, the company director, collaborated with pianist Tricia Dawn Williams to explore the ‘bird’s eye view’ and bird migration patterns, set to intricate compositions by John Cage, John Adams, and Ezio Bosso. The delicate movements unfolded on a miniature scale, drawing inspiration from cinematic perspectives, and establishing a unique dialogue between dance and music. On the other hand, Cantata by Mauro Bigonzetti, was a visceral dance journey reclaiming Southern Italy’s musical heritage, portraying a continuous interplay of opposites through passionate choreography. Together, these works created a dynamic fusion of movement and music, promising a captivating exploration of emotions and contrasts.

KorMalta – Malta National Choir was a collaborative partner for the third consecutive year, and their impact was noteworthy. The collaboration included the Enchanted Christmas concert where the programme featured a delightful blend of classical and traditional Christmas music, offering a heartwarming and festive experience by a remarkable all-female choir. Additionally, as part of the Art Explora Festival, KorMalta – Malta’s National Choir held Mare Nostrum. Under the direction of chorus master Riccardo Bianchi, KorMalta embarked on a captivating musical odyssey themed around the sea. The ensemble’s repertoire spans from the Renaissance era, featuring the timeless Mille Regretz attributed to Josquin Des Prez, to Monteverdi’s renowned madrigal Ecco Mormorar l’Onde, which is adorned with the poetic brilliance of Torquato Tasso.

Spazju Kreattiv again joined forces with Festivals Malta for the Carnival programme, marking the fourth consecutive year of collaboration. The season featured an exhibition Pawlu Curmi ‘Il-Pampalun’: Il-Bniedem, Il-Leġġenda and the traditional performance of Il-Qarċilla, staged at our theatre.

Furthermore, the longstanding artists’ residency programme continued to be at the core of the programming through partnerships with the Valletta Cultural Agency, Valletta Design Cluster, the Ministry for Gozo, and the Cultural Gozo Directorate. It resulted in five residencies in Malta and one in Gozo, offering artists from four countries opportunities to research their ideas, connect with fellow creatives, and engage local communities through practice-driven initiatives. Additionally, the programme introduced a new strand, allowing visiting artists to stay in specific villages in Malta, enriching their research and fostering community-led activities.

The choir was accompanied by the pianoforte, presenting a variety of chamber formations in an intimate and poetic space for reflection, coordinated by Bianca Simone, alto section voice leader of KorMalta. Lastly, in May, the choir performed a concert titled William Byrd – Mass & Motets, showcasing the works of this renowned English composer of the Renaissance period known for his sacred choral music, including Masses, motets, and anthems, as well as secular vocal and instrumental compositions. Spazju Kreattiv again joined forces with Festivals Malta for the Carnival programme, marking the third consecutive year of collaboration. The programme featured an exhibition of costumes by Carnival enthusiasts and the traditional performance of Il-Qarċilla, staged at our theatre. Furthermore, the longstanding artists’ residency programme continued to be at the core of the programming through partnerships with the Valletta Cultural Agency, Valletta Design Cluster, the Ministry for Gozo, and the Cultural Gozo Directorate. It resulted in four residencies in Valletta and two in Gozo, offering artists from five countries opportunities to research their ideas, connect with fellow creatives, and engage local communities through practice- driven initiatives.

This strand included a collaboration with an international consortium co-funded by Creative Europe under the name Maritima-Islands, which investigated the environmental and social problems of the islands within the Mediterranean region and showcased these in the final artworks created by artists in collaboration with other creatives coming from the fields of science and technology.

Spazju Kreattiv continuously seeks collaboration with voluntary organisations to engage various communities, facilitating the exchange of knowledge and skills while offering support with artistic and administrative expertise. These strategic partnerships help diversify the range of creative projects produced or supported by Spazju Kreattiv, leveraging a broad stakeholder base.

Presently, collaboration agreements are in place between Fondazzjoni Kreattività and Electronic Music Malta, Opening Doors Association and The 3CL Foundation respectively.

Electronic Music Malta (EMM) is a non-governmental organisation that works with Spazju Kreattiv to promote electronic music in all its forms in Malta, including performance, composition, production, recording, engineering, and mastering. EMM also raises awareness about education, documentation, equipment restoration, and innovation in electronic music, as well as combining it with other art forms. During this season, EMM organised various events at Spazju Kreattiv, including the Circuits Festival, film screenings, vinyl listening sessions, and other initiatives to raise awareness about the electronic music industry.

Opening Doors Association is a voluntary arts organisation that provides opportunities for adults with diverse intellectual needs. The association hosts yearly performances showcasing the work developed by its artistic leaders and trainees, it also provides regular art training in different disciplines for its members. Spazju Kreattiv continues to collaborate with the Opening Doors Association by supporting their creative work and providing them with the physical and creative space to develop their ventures. This long-standing collaboration provides professional development to practitioners in the disability and artistic sector while raising awareness of the importance of inclusion and accessibility within the creative sector and beyond.

The Commonwealth Centre for Connected Learning  Foundation (The 3CL Foundation – 3CL for short) is a public EdTech foundation registered in Malta in February 2017 to operate as an arms-length Education Foundation. A new collaboration with Fondazzjoni Kreattività has been established to organise workshops, and panel discussions at Spazju Kreattiv. So far we had: ‘A Conversation with Joe Toscano’ and ‘Manifestos for the Digital Age’ as part of the Art Explora Festival programme.

The development and cultivation of relationships with diverse international organisations, artists, and entities are crucial for the evolution of a contemporary art programme. Through carefully chosen international collaborations, Spazju Kreattiv has enhanced its global profile, contributing to arts policy-making and creating projects focused on the Euro-Mediterranean diaspora.

During the 2023-2024 season, Spazju Kreattiv proudly showcased a variety of international partnerships, most notably the inaugural Malta stopover for the Art Explora Festival in collaboration with the Art Explora Foundation. This 10-day festival, supported by Creative Europe, featured over 95 artists, 55 events, and attracted 21,000 visitors.

Collaborations with embassies and diplomatic representations in Malta remain particularly vital to the success of the Spazju Kreattiv programme, especially in cinema and visual arts projects. The European Film Festival, organised by EUNIC Malta in October 2023, was one of the first major international events of the year. The second edition of this Festival featured a selection of nine films that centred around the theme of sustainability, encompassing social, economic, and environmental aspects. EUNIC, which stands for European Union National Institutes for Culture, serves as a network of European networks of organisations engaged in international cultural relations.

In November 2023, Spazju Kreattiv Cinema played a significant role in several prominent European events. As part of the 8th of the European Arthouse Cinema Day 2023, Spazju Kreattiv Cinema joined numerous cinemas worldwide in celebrating the richness of European cultural diversity through film.

Additionally, Spazju Kreattiv cinema, in collaboration with the Creative Europe Desk Malta, the Ministry for Education, and the Ministry for the National Heritage, the Arts, and Local Government, had the honour of hosting the European Film Academy Young Audience Awards 2023. This event witnessed the participation of over 30 Maltese teenagers, who, alongside thousands of their European counterparts, constituted the largest film jury in the world.

Furthermore, Spazju Kreattiv Cinema actively participated in the European Cinema Night 2023. This special cinema night was organised in partnership with Europa Cinemas, Creative Europe-MEDIA, and the European Commission, emphasising the collective effort to promote and celebrate European cinema. This was followed by the LUX Audience Award Screenings 2024 in February, organised by the European Parliament and the European Film Academy, showcasing 5 films selected through an open public vote by all member states.

The Film Days have fostered strong connections with various embassies and cultural institutions, resulting in a flourishing relationship. Throughout the year, the series of Film Days offered a diverse range of cinematic experiences. The Spanish Embassy presented the Spanish Film Days, providing an opportunity to explore the richness of Spanish cinema.

Likewise, the collaboration with Alliance Française de Malte-Méditerranée and the French Embassy in Malta continued with the French Film Days, a monthly screening series featuring French films. In November, the Estonian Film Days made a return in collaboration with the Estonian Embassy in Rome. This edition showcased four arthouse films, including an animated film for children, a documentary, and live-action films, offering a glimpse into Estonian cinema. The month of February marked the commencement of the Italian Film Days, which focused on contemporary Italian cinema. This initiative, organised in partnership with the Italian Cultural Institute in Valletta, the Faculty of Arts, Master in Film Studies of the University of Malta, and under the patronage of the Italian Embassy, aimed to highlight the richness of Italian filmmaking.

Spazju Kreattiv’s partnership with the Malta China Cultural Centre continued to thrive for 2023 I 2024, demonstrated by the successful Chinese Happy New Year Film Festival 2024. This Festival featured five screenings, including acclaimed films such as The Bravest and The Climbers, offering audiences an opportunity to immerse themselves in Chinese cinema.

Similarly, the collaborations between Spazju Kreattiv and the Lithuanian Embassy in Rome and the Irish Embassy continued to flourish. The Lithuanian Film Days, now in its second edition, presented a captivating film series comprising four films that celebrated the works of renowned filmmaker Jonas Mekas and showcased the talent of contemporary Lithuanian filmmakers. Likewise, the second edition of the Irish Film Days introduced four new titles that had never been showcased on the big screen in Malta before. The season included new collaborations with the Palestinian Embassy and the Romanian Embassy in Rome leading to a bigger diversity of films and activities. This collaboration allowed Maltese audiences to experience the richness and diversity of Irish cinema in an immersive cinematic setting.

The season comprised two concerts in collaboration with the Austrian Embassy for Malta showcasing some of the best emerging Austrian music performers as part of The New Austrian Sound of Music. Similarly, the partnership with the French Embassy in Malta extended to projects like the exhibition Melita, מלט −mlṭ, refuge, the performance event ENEMY (a peace conference) and the residency TURBA.

Furthermore, in mid-June, as part of World Refugee Day, Spazju Kreattiv collaborated with UNHCR Malta to screen two film premieres, which shed light on those forced to flee their homes. Furthermore, the UN World Anti-Trafficking Day was commemorated with a film event in collaboration with the Cross Culture International Foundation Malta (CCIF)

These collaborations not only enrich the artistic excellence of our programme but also provide Spazju Kreattiv with the opportunity to foster new exchanges and elevate its global reputation.

Throughout the 2023-2024 season, Spazju Kreattiv retained its membership in several prominent international networks. Establishing and nurturing long-standing as well as new partnerships on an international level has become a cornerstone of the organisation’s strategic approach.

This year we partnered up with 8 other institutions from 8 different small European countries to create the Great Little European Network (GLEN). GLEN  connects the smallest countries of Europe through common networking and training programmes to contribute to designing more meaningful practices and more sustainable performing arts sectors in the concerned countries, interconnecting them and taking a prominent place on the international scene. The network aims to be an incubator for those who, while benefiting from a local anchorage, ambition to develop their practice internationally.

In 2024 we also joined Pearle network, the European Federation of Music and Live Performance Organisations. This network is the leading organisation on EU and international regulatory affairs issues affecting daily operations or live performance organisations.

Spazju Kreattiv continued to be part of the Europa Cinemas network, thanks to an increased number of films in our cinema programme. The objective of Europa Cinemas is to provide operational and financial support to cinemas that showcase a significant number of European non-national films, while also offering events, initiatives, and promotional activities targeted at Young Audiences.

In this framework, we actively participated in the 27 Times Cinema call, promoting this opportunity to our audiences on social media. In addition, Spazju Kreattiv took part in European Arthouse Day 2023, a day dedicated to European film, through a collaboration with the International Confederation of Art Cinemas (CICAE). CICAE is a unique international association of art house cinema theatres, serving as a valuable source of information and professional training for independent cinemas.

This year, we also strengthened our participation in IETM, a global network of over 500 performing arts organisations and individuals. This collaboration led to the establishment of new contacts and the development of projects as part of our programme.

Additionally, Spazju Kreattiv is a member of the European Network of Cultural Centres (ENCC), which focuses on capacity building, networking, and advocacy through conferences, training, research, and data-gathering. Our Artistic Director, Daniel Azzopardi, also serves as a board member for ENCC, allowing Spazju Kreattiv to actively participate in international policy-making and collaborate on creative initiatives with foreign entities.

Membership in ResArtis, an international network of over 490 centres, organisations, and individuals, has enabled Spazju Kreattiv to connect with Artists’ Residencies worldwide and further develop our Artists’ Residency framework.

Being a part of ASSITEJ, the international network of professionals working for children and young people, has greatly benefited our ŻiguŻajg Festival and season through contact building and networking with over 90 international centres and organisations. This involvement has been crucial in staying updated on fellow practitioners’ efforts to ensure the sustainability of arts for children. Likewise, ŻiguŻajg has maintained its relationship with the Europe for Festivals, Festivals for Europe (EFFE) label, an international festivals network initiated by the European Union.

Lastly, Spazju Kreattiv is part of the Anna Lindh Foundation, an international organisation that promotes intercultural and civil society in the Mediterranean region with continued efforts to strengthen dialogue between Europe, Africa and the Middle East through arts and creativity.
