ŻiguŻajg Season
The ŻiguŻajg Season for Children and Young People, developed as part of the Spazju Kreattiv programme, once again brought a vibrant and diverse array of performances and activities designed to captivate and educate young audiences. This year’s lineup featured everything from heartwarming tales of friendship and bravery to innovative workshops and inclusive performances, demonstrating the season’s commitment to providing enriching and memorable experiences for children and their families.
This year’s theatrical and cinematic offerings were particularly noteworthy. “The Smeds & The Smoos” told a touching story of two young aliens from rival clans who defy their families to explore the universe together, ultimately teaching lessons of acceptance and unity. Similarly, “Superworm” entertained us with its humorous adventure about humility and friendship, as the titular hero and his friend Butterfly save the day from the evil Wizard Lizard.
Animated features continued to add a magical dimension to this year’s season. “Puffin Rock and the New Friends” brought beloved characters from the Netflix series to the big screen, with Oona and her friends embarking on a mission to save a missing egg amidst a looming storm. “Teddy’s Christmas” followed a young girl’s quest to reunite with a living teddy bear, providing heartwarming stories that resonated with themes of friendship, responsibility, and the magic of the holiday season.
Inclusivity was a major focus this year, particularly with productions like “Snowglobe.” This multi-sensory theatre experience was designed specifically for autistic and neurodivergent audiences, offering a uniquely immersive adventure within a snow globe setting. The combination of live music and non-verbal communication created an empowering and inclusive experience, ensuring that all children could enjoy the magic of theatre.
“Kids Dig Science” combined puppetry and science to highlight the importance of environmental conservation. The interactive workshops that followed each performance encouraged young audiences to think critically and creatively about solutions to ecological challenges. Similarly, “Ninho,” a visual poetry performance by Partículas Elementares from Portugal, used minimal props and expressive artistry to tell a profound story of friendship and connection, captivating both children and adults with its simplicity and depth.
The season’s animated films continued to impress. “Circle Square” revolved around a diverse community of characters, each episode highlighting cooperation and problem-solving. “Katak the Brave Beluga” and “Zog & The Flying Doctors” brought adventures from the ocean and skies, respectively, with Katak learning the value of bravery and uniqueness, while Zog and his friends navigated challenges to help others.
Other noteworthy films included “Revolting Rhymes,” a collection of twisted fairy tales, and “The Snail and the Whale,” which explored the unlikely friendship between a sea snail and a humpback whale. “Pip & Posy Cinema Show” provided interactive fun, and the Danish award-winning performance “Splotch” offered a playful, musical discovery journey for very young audiences with its use of clay, water, and live music.
ŻiguŻajg Art Jam – Summer Bootcamp introduced children to contemporary art practices through a series of workshops that culminated in an exhibition of their work. This program fostered creativity and provided young artists with the opportunity to see their work displayed and appreciated.
Finally, the enchanting “Tgħanniqa Xewkija” musical, which premiered during the ŻiguŻajg Festival, continued its successful run. The journey of Bertu, a prickly pear who longs for a hug, showcased themes of friendship and determination through original songs and imaginative storytelling.
The ŻiguŻajg Season for Children and Young People has excelled in offering a rich and diverse programme that entertains, educates, and inspires. This year’s films, performances, and workshops have provided children with invaluable experiences, from the excitement of animated adventures to the hands-on creativity of art workshops. The season’s dedication to inclusivity and environmental education ensures that it not only entertains but also imparts important lessons and values. As the season comes to a close, it is clear that ŻiguŻajg continues to be a leading force in nurturing young minds and fostering a lifelong love for the arts.
