At Spazju Kreattiv, there is a commitment to showcase a diverse range of films from different parts of the globe being the only Arthouse Cinema in Malta. From film festivals’ awardees and Oscar winners to live-streamed theatre and opera shows, Maltese film features and thought-provoking documentaries, Spazju Kreattiv has got it all. We believe that cinema has the power to inspire, educate and entertain, and that’s why we offer a carefully curated selection of films that appeal to a wide variety of tastes and interests. The year kicked off with the commencement of Kino Dreams, a retrospective dedicated to the works of Wim Wenders. This film event marked the first-ever opportunity for Maltese audiences to witness the 4K restorations of Wings of Desire, The American Friend, and Kings of The Road on the big cinema screen. Running from the beginning of the year until September, the programme showcased Wenders’ most acclaimed films. Throughout the year, our cinema hosted films from all over the world such as Don’t Worry Darling, Both Sides of the Blade, Decision to Leave, Triangle of Sadness, Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Whale, Close, Beau is Afraid and many more. Musicals also made a return with the acclaimed film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical and Tony award-winning show Anything Goes.
In June, the much anticipated Asteroid City by Wes Anderson premiered at Cannes Festival, and subsequently exclusively at Spazju Kreattiv Cinema. Isle of Dogs and The Grand Hotel Budapest were also screened in celebration of Anderson’s new release, and a special premiere event hosted many filmgoers and fans of his work. These are not the only classics that made it back on our screens. Edward Scissorhands was screened as a special Valentine’s film event as the people’s preferred choice after a poll was shared on social media asking our followers to choose which film they would like to see back. Our cinema programme also included monthly screenings with notable embassies and organisations representations on the island including the French Film Days in collaboration with Alliance Francaise de Malte-Méditerranée, Italian Film Days in collaboration with Istituto Di Cultura – La Valletta, Spanish Film Days in collaboration with the Embassy of Spain in Malta, and the Irish Film Days in collaboration with Embassy of Ireland in Malta. Alongside these events, our cinema also hosts tailored film events like the Chinese New Year Festival in collaboration with the Chinese Cultural Centre and the Lithuanian and Estonian film fests in collaboration with the Lithuanian and Estonian Embassies in Rome. The nature of this programme allows for the exploration of similar opportunities in the future.
In addition to international and Maltese films, patrons can also experience a unique viewing of the world’s most beloved art with expert insights from the foremost historians and art critics in the world at our cinema through the Exhibition on Screen series. These exhibition-based art documentaries provide a unique record of outstanding exhibitions and in-depth accounts of the artists and their periods for years to come. This year, our screenings included documentaries about American artist Mary Cassatt, the highly popular Vermeer’s latest exhibition, and the Tokyo stories. Apart from films based on art and artists, the season catered for those people looking for serious drama or award- winning titles through National Theatre
Live screenings broadcasted to our cinema. Our NT Live screenings for this season were the acclaimed productions Jack Absolute Flies Again by Richard Bean and Oliver Chris, Prima Facie featuring Jodie Comer, David Hare’s Straight Line Crazy, Much Ado About Nothing directed by Simon Godwin, The Seagull by Anton Chekhov from the Jamie Lloyd Company, William Shapespeare’s tragedy Othello , The Crucible directed by Lyndsey Turner, the adaptation of the popular film Life of Pi , the new political drama play by James Graham Best of Enemies, Cecil Philip Taylor’s Good featuring David Tennant, and the returning sensation Fleabag with Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
Speaking of theatre, this year saw the return of MET Opera Live in full HD with popular opera performances screened exclusively at our cinema. Throughout the year, a number of LIVE performances as well as various encore screenings provide a different experience in our cinema. Amongst the most popular events were Cherubini’s Medea featuring Sondra Radvanovsky, Verdi’s La Traviata with soprano Nadine Sierra, Kevin Puts’ The Hours with soprano Kelli O’Hara and mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato joining Fleming as the opera’s trio of heroines, and the new production of Die Zauberflote directed by Simon McBurney and Ivo van Hove’s take on Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Screenings for children and toddlers remained popular within the film programme in collaboration with ŻiguŻajg. For the Festival, Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty and Felix and the Hidden Treasure were screened as part of the programme. Later throughout the season, a varied selection of monthly toddler screenings were hosted at our cinema including The Snail and the Whale, The Gruffalo and The Gruffalo’s Child , Sarah & Duck, The Highway Rat, Pip & Posy’s Cinema Show and Superworm. Spazju Kreattiv is focused on celebrating art and culture through cinema and that is why we screen numerous film initiatives throughout the year. The films chosen from international film festivals are the best of the best and incorporate a wide variety of languages and cultures. We believe that film has the power to transport audiences to different parts of the world and immerse them in different cultures and ways of life.
